Grant proposal

Summary:

Last year was my first year as the Sculpture and Ceramics teacher, and I took the year to evaluate the
tools that we have in this space and how they are serving our population as a whole. I see some gaps in
our major ceramics equipment and tools that are creating large inequities for students that experience
differences in the way that they interact with materials and information. Specifically, I think that we could
be better serving our students with physical limitations that prohibit them from accessing materials fully.
The support that this equipment will bring extends beyond our special education students to general
education students that may be less coordinated or have more limited gross and fine motor control.
There are also students that have a difficult time remembering all of the different steps for building with
clay, and these supports would lessen the information that they need to process. I want every student
that comes into this space to leave with work that they are extremely proud to bring home to their
families, and to show their peers. I have gotten input on this grant from Max Glick, the special education
teacher in LC4, and Patrick Noble, the district Occupational Therapist as well. I plan to continue to work
with them to bring more adaptive tools in. I have had access to the equipment that I am asking for in a
different public school setting. They made noticeable differences in what students were able to
accomplish in their classes, especially for special education students, as well as medically fragile
students.
The equipment and tools that I am requesting are too expensive for the school’s budget, but will
make meaningful shifts in the scope of the curriculum for all of my classes for the foreseeable future.

GRANT DETAILS

Educational Issue:

This grant works towards our district goal #3 – To support school and classroom cultures that promote
inclusive and equitable student learning and development. It also will help all students meet the
following National Arts Standards (which in turn will help them with the other standards categories of
Presenting, Responding, and Connecting):
Creating:
VA:Cr1.2.IIa Choose from a range of materials and methods of traditional and contemporary artistic
practices to plan works of art and design.
VA:Cr2.1.IIaThrough experimentation, practice, and persistence, demonstrate acquisition of skills and
knowledge in a chosen art form.

Goals & Outcomes:

My short term goal would be to install this equipment and start using it with students on a case by case
basis. The slab roller would arrive in a few weeks, so we could start using it this semester. By next
semester I would implement new curriculum based on slab rolling for all classes that incorporate the
equipment, and would continue assess and refine the curriculum moving forward. I will also work with
my colleagues to invite their classes to use the materials if appropriate, and align our curriculums. I
anticipate that this grant will allow students to really expand the scope of what they are able to do in this
space, and with clay. These supportive tools will also help them feel confident and proud of their final
products. There is a huge window for failure at every step of the ceramics process, and limiting
complicated steps where most failure happens by adding in supports via equipment will make a major
difference in all student learning outcomes.

Activities:

I would be able to do all ordering and set up for this project, possibly with help from my colleagues to
install the slab roller and discuss curriculum alignment.

Innovation & Collaboration:

This grant is innovative in its use of tools to increase student equity across the board, as well as
extending the scope of our curriculum for all students. It is the beginning of a series of grants that I plan
on writing with input from the special education department, and district occupational therapists. I have
also been working closely with Jenn Levatino, the director of the Art department and have gotten input
from other art teachers that use clay in their curriculums such as Paul Hackett.

IMPACT

Timeline:

The lead time for the slab roller is a few weeks, and I would assume the other tools would be similar. We

could begin using them as soon as they get here.
