The second grade team is interested in supporting our students’ various sensory needs. We would like to do this through the use of noise-cancelling headphones, sensory mats/objects for our calming corners, and “happy lamps” to avoid harsh lighting and provide a calmer classroom space. Many of my students have verbally expressed how much noise-cancelling headphones help them to focus when working independently. I have purchased three pairs, but it is not enough to satisfy the needs of the 21 students in my classroom. In addition, Mrs. Metayer (23 students)and Mrs. Troisi (22 students) strongly feel that these objects will benefit their students, as well, as many are seeking breaks in the calming corner and sensory input in various ways.
